"He was very supportive of women, and encouraged me to take over the foundation," she said in 1989. Beckwith shared one of his finest hours with a Hartford student at the rededication of the Soldiers and Sailors Arch on June 8, 1988, with thousands of residents in attendance. Beckwith focused attention on Airrion Bethea, 14, a freshman at Weaver High School.

Bethea wrote an essay on how 128 AfricanAmerican soldiers from Hartford were among the thousands of black soldiers to fight in the Civil War. Beckwith believed in 1988 that it was time to right a 102-year-old wrong, and directed that the role of Hartford's black soldiers should be written in bronze on a plaque to be set in the arch. Beckwith called Airrion to the stage to read the new inscription on the arch for the rededication. Airrion's mother, Jacqueline Be- thea, was in the crowd in tears. "You just gave me the proudest moment of my life," she told Beckwith later.

Airrion, now 27, is studying to be a lawyer in Philadelphia, where he graduated from Temple University. "Ed was a great guy," said Jackie Bethea. "I doubt Airrion would have gone as far as he did if it wasn't for Ed." Beckwith, a graduate of the University of Connecticut, started the contributions and grants department at CIGNA, where he worked 30 years. He lived in Bushnell Towers condominiums for several years, and retired as a CIGNA vice president to South Portland. He leaves his wife, Paula Beckwith, three children and three grand-children.

Alvin Goodin, 71; Was Aide To Both Sens. Dodd Alvin R. Goodin, 71, a close friend of and political aide to U.S. Sen. Christopher J.

Dodd, and his father, the late U.S. Sen. Thomas Dodd, died Nov. 29 in Florida after an illness. Goodin, a longtime Coventry resident who in recent years maintained a home in Sarasota, was an entrepreneur and, friends say, a fun-loving spirit.

At different times he owned restaurants and commercial office space. Goodin, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II and the Korean War, was active for years in Coventry town affairs. He was part of the Coventry Players, a theatrical group, and served on the town's boards of finance and health. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m.

in the First Congregational Church, 1171 Main Coventry. Goodin began a long association with the Dodd family decades ago by volunteering as a driver in Connecticut for Thomas J. Dodd, a U.S. senator from 1959 to 1971 and member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1953 to 1957.Goodin knew Christopher Dodd while the latter was growing up.

In 1974, after the death of Thomas Dodd, it was Goodin who prevailed on Christopher Dodd then a lawyer in the New London area to run for the 2nd Congressional District seat. Goodin ran the campaign and Dodd won, taking office in 1975. For a year or so Goodin worked out of Dodd's Norwich office as a special assist- ant. Friends of Dodd and Goodin tell the story of how, at that time, Dodd was ready to present Goodin with a set of commemorative House of Representatives co*cktail glasses but Goodin refused saying he'd rather have some U.S. Senate glasses.

Whether or not that legend is strictly accurate, the record shows that by 1976, Goodin had left Dodd's staff and was organizing a statewide effort to get Dodd elected to the Senate in 1980. Dodd won again. By the late 1980s, Goodin was one of Dodd's landlords AS a co-owner of Putnam Park, the then new office building near the Connecticut River in Wethersfield, where Dodd's staff still maintains its Connecticut offices.
